Back in 1999, I was in Tower Records (that was a store where you could actually walk in and buy records and CDs. You know - a wreckastow) when I heard a song being played in the store. It had this heavy guitar bluesy-rock feel to it so I asked one of the people that worked there who it was. They said it was Shannon Curfman and it was her new CD Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions. So I went and found her CD and decided to buy it. While talking to the clerk, I asked if she had anything else out and he said he doubted it since she was only 14 years old. I was like WTF? There is no way that a 14 year old was playing guitar and singing like that. He assured me that she was and showed me an article in some record magazine (I forget which one) that had a short bio about her. Well, I was blown away. A few years later, five or six to be exact, I actually got to see her perform live when she came to town. Her show at 12th & Porter was mind blowing. It wasn't that theatrical but her playing and singing reminded me of a young Bonnie Raitt. I understand now that she is actually part of Kid Rock's band and is touring with him but I still hope she will release some more solo albums.
So where does the purple connection come in? Well, besides living in Minneapolis, Shannon had some interesting musicians and singers on Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions. People like Michael Bland, Sonny (Sonny T) Thompson, Margaret (Margie) Cox, Paul (St. Paul) Peterson and his brother Ricky Peterson all contributed to this record. So you see, there is the purple connection.
Here is an example of her music. Playing With Fire talks about the guitar playing of Robert Johnson (selling his soul to the devil) and Jimi Hendrix (playing Woodstock and setting his guitar on fire) and how they were playing with fire. At the end, she is talking about herself.
Anyway, I thought I would share this with anyone interested. So here it is and I hope you enjoy it because Shannon Curfman is "playing with fire!!!"
